What is particle board? What are the advantages and disadvantages of particle board? Particle board is the most commonly used board in furniture and decoration. What is particle board? What are the advantages and disadvantages of particle board? Many people are still not very clear. This article will introduce in detail what particle board is? What are the advantages and disadvantages of particle board?

What is particle board?

Particle board, also known as bagasse board, is a man-made board made of wood or other lignocellulosic materials, which is glued together under heat and pressure after applying adhesive. It is mainly used in furniture manufacturing, construction industry, and train and car carriage manufacturing. Because particle board has a relatively uniform structure and good processing performance, it can be processed into large-format boards as needed, and is a good raw material for making furniture of different specifications and styles. The finished particle board does not need to be dried again and can be used directly, and its sound absorption and sound insulation performance are also very good. But it also has its inherent disadvantages, because the edges are rough and easy to absorb moisture, so the edge sealing process of furniture made of particle board is particularly important. In addition, due to the large volume of particle board, furniture made of it is also heavier than other boards.

Advantages of particleboard

Particleboard has good sound absorption and sound insulation performance;

The finished particleboard does not need to be dried again and can be used directly. Since the particleboard is made of wood or other wood cellulose material fragments and is processed into an artificial board, it has a certain sound absorption and sound insulation effect.

The interior is a granular structure with a cross-staggered structure. The performance in each direction is basically the same, and the lateral bearing capacity is good.

However, because particle board has rough edges and easily absorbs moisture, it is generally not suitable as a home lining or for making door and window covers.

The surface of the particle board is flat and can be veneered in various ways.

The surface of particleboard is flat. Although it is artificially made, the texture is realistic, the thickness and density are very small, it is resistant to pollution and aging, and can be veneered in various ways. Particleboard is prone to toothing when cutting, and has high requirements for detailed processing equipment and process technology.

Disadvantages of particle board

  • The internal structure is granular and not easy to mill.
  • It is easy to cause toothing when cutting the board, so some processes have higher requirements for processing equipment.
  • The quality difference between different particleboard products is relatively large and difficult to distinguish; the bending and tensile resistance is relatively poor, and it cannot withstand strong bending and pulling.

Quality judgment of particleboard

From the appearance, the size and shape of the wood chip particles in the center of the cross section are generally 5-10MM in length. If it is too long, the structure is loose, and if it is too short, the deformation resistance is poor, and the so-called static bending strength does not meet the standard.

The moisture resistance of particleboard depends on its density and moisture-proof agent. No matter how good it is, it will not work if it is soaked in water. Moisture-proof refers to moisture resistance, not waterproofness, so it must be distinguished in future use. In the northern region, including North China, Northwest China, and Northeast China, the moisture content of the board should generally be controlled at 8-10%; in the southern region, including coastal areas, it should be controlled between 9-14%, otherwise the board will easily absorb moisture and deform.

In terms of surface flatness and smoothness, it is generally sanded with about 200# sandpaper when leaving the factory. Generally, it is better to be finer up and down, but in some cases, such as sticking fireproof boards, it is too fine to be glued.

The above is the introduction of the classification, uses and raw material processes of particle board in this article. I hope it can help you!
