MDF Board

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is a board made of wood fiber or other plant fiber, which is prepared by fiber preparation, applied with synthetic resin, and pressed under heating and pressure.
According to its density, it can be divided into high-density fiberboard, medium-density fiberboard, and low-density fiberboard. The nominal thickness of medium-density fiberboard ranges from 0.65g/cm3 to 0.80g/cm3.
Due to its uniform structure, fine material, stable performance, impact resistance, and easy processing, MDF is widely used in domestic furniture, decoration, musical instruments, and packaging.

The classification of MDF board

MDF Board characteristics

MDF board has a smooth surface, fine material, stable performance, firm edges, and good decorative properties. However, density board has poor moisture resistance. In comparison, density board has a weaker nail holding force than particle board. If the screws become loose after tightening, it is difficult to fix them in the same position.

Main advantages

  1. MDF board is easy to be painted. Various coatings and paints can be evenly applied on the density board, which is the preferred substrate for paint effects.
  2. MDF board is also a beautiful decorative board.
  3. Various veneers, printed paper, PVC, adhesive film, melamine impregnated paper and light metal sheets can be finished on the surface of density board.
  4. Hard density board can be punched and drilled to make sound-absorbing panels, which are used in architectural decoration projects.
  5. Excellent physical properties, uniform material, no dehydration problem.

Processing of MDF board

The processing of MDF board mainly includes the following steps:

  • ‌Raw material preparation‌: First, the wood is peeled and granulated, and then it is ground into powder using a crusher. These powders are composed of wood fibers or other plant fibers.
  • ‌Fiber preparation‌: Put the wood powder in a large jar, add glue and stir evenly. This step ensures that the glue is evenly coated on the wood powder.
  • ‌Pre-pressing‌: The purpose of pre-pressing is to remove the air in the slab to prevent the air from overflowing and damaging the slab during hot pressing, and to make the slab have a certain density to prevent collapse or breakage during transportation and storage.
  • ‌Hot pressing‌: The pre-pressed board enters the hot pressing stage to compact the wood powder under high temperature and high pressure. This step is usually carried out at a high temperature of more than 100 degrees and the pressure is usually 5 MPa.
  • ‌Drying‌: The board after hot pressing needs to be cured, that is, the cooled board is placed for 12 hours to ensure its stability.
  • ‌Surface treatment‌: Finally, the board is surface treated, including sanding and size cutting, to ensure that the board surface is smooth and the size is accurate.

application of MDF board

Mainly used for laminate flooring, door panels, partitions, furniture, etc. MDF is mainly used for surface treatment of mixed oil process in home decoration; medium density fiberboard is generally used for furniture, because high density fiberboard is too high and it is easy to crack, so it cannot be used for furniture. Generally, high density fiberboard is used for indoor and outdoor decoration, office and civil furniture, audio, vehicle interior decoration, and can also be used as the material for antistatic flooring, wall panels, anti-theft doors, wall panels, partitions, etc. in computer rooms. It is also a good material for packaging. In the future, it will be used as a base material for the production of laminate flooring, etc.

Tips for purchasing density boards

  • Surface cleanliness: The surface of density boards with good surface cleanliness should have no obvious particles. Particles are caused by impurities introduced during the pressing process, which not only affects the appearance, but also makes the paint film easy to peel off.
  • Surface smoothness: When you touch the surface with your hand, it should feel smooth. If it feels astringent, it means that the processing is not in place.
  • Surface flatness: The surface of the density board should be bright and flat. If the surface is uneven when viewed from the side, it means that there is a problem with the material or coating process.
  • Overall elasticity: Harder boards must be inferior products.
